In the group I attend regularly (a recovery community), we are regularly reminded to express gratitude for ourselves and others. It can feel unnatural, like self-love. Practice, practice, practice.

Having been part of a church community in my childhood, gratitude was indoctrinated. ‘Always be thankful’ and ‘there’s always someone else worse off’ - that’s my Mum’s. So it’s been a lifelong habit and one I’m grateful for. I did learn how to moan in my 50’s, but I don’t think the two things are mutually exclusive!

Friends of mine have a ‘goody jar’ that they put in notes of the things they’re thankful for daily, weekly, whatever and then tip it out at the end of the year and review. Nice idea. I’ve done it a couple of times.

Self-love is definitely harder for me having had a whole childhood of abuse, criticism and negativity.

Thanks for reading and engaging, Glenn. Greatly appreciated.

Self-love is one of the discussions I hear often at the group I go to. Small things do add up to bigger things, it just takes time. Indoctrination of gratitude is inevitably a big turn-off. Perhaps it easier to think of it as reconnecting with yourself and who you truly are, minus all that noise from outside. Changing the internal script is hard. But essentially it's about recognising when you're being hooked or hijacked by someone else's agenda or problems. 'Let them' can be a useful mantra.

Wise words, Glenn. My sister struggles more than I do, but then having bipolar probably doesn’t help anything.

Sounds like a week a lovely week, lots of good moments to add to our internal larder cupboard, to take out and ingest in the more barren weeks ❤️ keep bringing joy with your words and art, thank you

Thanks, Kimberley. Appreciate your support, always.

Definitely a week to hoard the memory of. Would be nice if it had been spread out a bit! 😂

How lovely! Would you put a link here for your art and art cards?

Thanks, Julie. Yes, indeed. I want my Substack to be about the writing, so haven’t linked any of my other activities here, despite mentioning them, as I don’t want my readers and subscribers to feel any pressure, but as you’re asking, I’m happy to oblige! The website is organised into canvases, work on paper photos and cards. Hopefully you’ll find your way around! https://debhandmade.com/
