Social media, marketing and promotion companies would have you believe that everyone is your competitor, that you’re in a race to be bigger, better, bolder. A bit of friendly rivalry can be healthy, but I genuinely believe that we are better together, that we are colleagues and co-conspirators, not enemies to be ‘beaten’.
With you on that, Juliet. I belonged to a writing group in the south which was awful. Thankfully I’ve had more positive experiences than negative ones.

It feels so different being in a supportive environment, where people want you to succeed. Some arenas can be so toxic.
I've often been surprised by how unsupportive (and even toxic) some creative groups can be. It's valuable to be able to find the supportive arenas.
